What The Hell Is A Birth Chart?

A birth chart, or natal chart, is a map that reveals the plotted placements of your zodiac signs in their respective planetary rulership within specific Houses in the astrological horoscope. These placements are interpreted based on the type of questions being asked and the type of astrology the practitioner follows.

Just like your DNA, every individual’s birth chart is different because the planetary placements on the birth chart play an important role in forecasting how our thoughts, feelings, behaviours, along with our external circumstances are influenced.

An astrological chart can help you:

  • Discover how you process information based on your birth chart, the method you use, and help you find an alternative to solving a problem you’ve never thought possible
  • Find an answer to a specific burning question that has been on your mind for months, or sometimes, years
  • Select the most favourable or auspicious time for a specific type of future action such as getting married, founding a business, or taking a long vacation overseas
  • Gain insights on the fate of a nation or the country of your residence so that you can be prepared for the unexpected outcome which could have significant impact on your family or livelihood
  • Predict weather patterns if you are living in a country prone to natural disasters
  • Diagnose the course of an illness or find symptoms that needs to be closely examined
  • Determine the compatibility of a couple or examine how people will get along with one another within a specific setting
  • Forecast future periods of prosperity or the lack of, or to discover something meaningful about an event that has already occurred in relation to an individual or a community.

The techniques to interpreting a person’s birth chart have changed over the course of history even though the fundamentals of interpretation have remained the same. These have varied from person to person depending on the various influential factors such as the culture of where the astrologer lives in and where the technique was developed, the purpose of the use of the birth chart, as well as the individual’s personal beliefs.

Identifying the parts of the birth chart

The birth chart is drawn using an imaginary 360-degree circle in the sky that estimates the path of the Sun over the course of a year. This path is known as the ecliptic. The other side of the path known as the path of the equator, as projected from the earth. At the points where the two circles cross each other mark the start of Spring and Autumn.

As we divide the path of the ecliptic into twelve, each division is a 30-degree segment represented by one of the twelve constellations in the astrological zodiac. The zodiac is based on the constellations and seasons of the Northern hemisphere since the zodiac was developed and modified by the Greeks and Romans from Babylonian astrology/astronomy.

The chart wheel is visually reversed from what you would normally see or draw on the map of today. On a topographical map, East is located to the right side of the map, and North is at the top. On the astrological map (the birth chart), it is the opposite. East, where the sun rises, is located on the left side of the chart and North, when it is midnight, is located at the bottom.

In the Northern hemisphere, where Western astrology originated, you look toward the South to see the position of the Sun. So the daylight portion of the chart is at the top. The night-time portion is at the bottom.
