What Hurts You Most Makes You Stronger: The Case of Chiron

12 November 2022by Frederick0

We have been hurt before. And from the wounds we suffered draws us closer to discovering our strengths and the bountiful resources we have to start all over, and eventually become an inspiration to others.

You’d probably be familiar with the asteroid Chiron (In Greek: Χείρων; pronounced as Kai-Ron) if you’re not new to astrology. If you are, then you’ve come to the right place!

In astrology, Chiron represents what is known as the “wounded healer” and having a Chiron placement on your birth chart describes the area of life in which you require healing and a potential point of inspiration to others.

Let me share the story of a Greek mythical character named Chiron and why he is known as the “wounded healer”.

The Story of Chiron

The Story of Chiron (Part 1)
The Story of Chiron (Part 1)

Chiron is the son of the Greek god Kronos (AKA Saturn in Roman culture) and his mother, Philyra, was a beautiful water-nymph. Kronos was searching for his then baby son, Zeus with the intention of devouring him for supper that night. However, Kronos was distracted from his goal upon seeing Philyra, one of the 3,000 Oceanids, daughters of the Titans Oceanus and Tethys.

Kronos began to lust after Philyra but she did not share in his desires. In the attempt to flee from the lustful advances of Kronos, Phylira transformed into a mare but Kronos caught up with her after turning himself into a stallion and violently raped her on Mount Pelion. After he had satisfied his own desires, Kronos left, never to return.

When Philyra gave birth to her son, Chiron, she was so disgusted by what she saw and abandoned the child. Chiron is a centaur-like creature that took the form of his father, Kronos. This abandonment by both parents was terrible news for Chiron at such a young age. His parents could have been there to love and care for young Chiron, but instead, he was later adopted by the Greek sun god, Apollo.

Apollo was the grandson of Kronos and so, Apollos was both Chiron’s father and nephew. Such is the weird chronology of Greek Mythology!

The Story of Chiron (Part 2)
The Story of Chiron (Part 2)

After Chiron’s adoption, Apollo taught him all that he knew and then, Chiron became a powerful mentor to the sons of kings and many of the most famous Greek heroes such as Jason, Asclepius, Hercules and Achilles.

One day, during a skirmish with the centaurs, Hercules accidentally wounded his friend and mentor, Chiron, in the knee with one of his arrows. The arrows Hercules had chosen to use were coated with the blood of Hydra, which was known to cause wounds that would never heal. Imagine being an immortal with a wound that could never heal, the pain goes on forever.

With no relief, the wound caused Chiron great pain and suffering. Responsible for the wound, Hercules struck a deal with Kronos. At that time, a Titan god Prometheus was taken captive by Zeus, the chief Olympian god, for stealing fire from Olympia to give it to the mortals. Every day, Zeus’ eagle would feed on Prometheus’ liver, and every night, his liver would heal. In order for Prometheus to be released, an immortal had to take his place at Tartarus. By stepping into Tartarus, an immortal had to give up his immortality and die.

Chiron agreed to take the place of Prometheus, and eventually died and was finally released from his wound that would never heal.

Chiron was honoured with the constellation of Centaurus, which is also known as Sagittarius.

Therefore, Chiron is associated with the sign of Sagittarius which rules the 9th House on the birth chart, which represents higher education, philosophy, mentorship, legal matters, foreign cultures, long-distance travel, religion and mass communication.

Pain As Guidance & Healing To Others

Although Chiron was wounded and abandoned by his loved ones, he was compassionate, respectful, faithful and loyal. He was a centaur but stood out from the rest of his kind for having vast experience and exemplary traits of a good man. This raised his humanity status above other beast-like centaurs.

The asteroid Chiron teaches us that we can be of great healing resource and guidance to those who have suffered similar fate in life. One also has the ability and strength to rise up and overcome his crisis caused by pain and learn from it, instead of wallowing in self-pity.

Chiron is about being an inspiration and of help to others through hurtful situations. We can also be strong despite our wounds. We can turn our negative situation into someone’s positive outcome by guiding, counselling, healing and teaching.

On our birth chart, Chiron sits in an area of our life where we receive the greatest pain yet, it’s an area where we can assist others with the insights and experience that we gained about ourselves from the pain we suffered.
